Climate of Wunsiedel, Kingdom of Bavaria, 1855

  • aThe German word for (the month of) May is Mai. The author’s word Wonnemonat, literally ‘delight month’ is a poetic word for May.

The Climate.

The climate is more harsh than mild, but, as soon as experience with it has toughened one up, healthful. Winter usually lasts over six months, spring is mostly cold, and the inhabitant of the Fichtel Mountains can rarely enjoy May.[a] Summer is as a rule hot with quick cold nights; it is true that the thunderstorms pass over without damage, but they are usually followed by cold days; most pleasant by far is autumn.

Two winds are troublesome, the raw west wind, which comes over the mountain range and which frequently turns into a northwesterly, and the east wind, which demands a hale chest and frequently turns into a northeast wind. A long ridge shelters some massifs [i.e., mountain-range sections] from the north wind.

Of the types of fruit, apples and pears thrive, some types of cherries and the plums seldom ripen, and the zwetschge [more oblong subspecies of plum] do not ripen at all.

Among the few occurring illnesses, podagra [i.e., gout, usually of the big toe] is common, probably as a result of the climatic conditions, and, as a proportion of the population, strikes very many, even those from the tradesman class.
