Immigration

Johann Georg Barthmann; his wife, K. Barbara (Müller) Barthmann; their first child, Anna J. Barthmann, and probable relative of his wife, Babette Müller (Anna Barbara (Müller) Nelson Kroeger, 1856–1910), immigrated to America together in 1880.

They embarked at the Port of Hamburg, Germany, on 26 May 1880 and crossed the Atlantic on the SS Suevia. Fourteen days later, on 9 June 1880, they passed through Castle Garden Emigrant Landing Depot, New York, New York, United States.

Franzen] Master of the Suevia do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Suevia at [Hamburg & Havre] from which port said Suevia has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant: and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Johann Georg Barthmann’s military service was probably in the military of the Kingdom of Bavaria, which was mostly independent of the military of the German Empire during peacetime (Fetridge 1889, 649). Even so, as part of the German Empire, twelve years of military service was mandatory (Constitution of the German Empire (English translation) 1871, Article 59; original German: Verfassung des Deutschen Reiches 1871, Artikel 59).

In 1880 Georg (age 24) emigrated from the German Empire with his wife and their baby. This was before his military service had ended, and he was convicted, presumably in absentia, for illegal emigration of a soldier:
